The ending was enough for me to forgive the lame love interest which normally would have sealed the deal for me to stop reading. The beginning was excellent, the middle was extremely boring and then was redeemed by the excellent end hence the 'compliment sandwich in a book' haha. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? The Duchess' voice made my blood run cold in some scenes! Some of the mens voices were a little dodgy but Violets voice stood out from everyone else. I love the 'snooty' voices she executes for the Royalty. What does Laura Kirman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book? This may be unpopular but The Duchess was my favourite! Violet came off as so bratty and immature in some scenes where as The Duchess had excellent voice acting and lines, I got excited for every scene she was in. The character progression was slow and the ridiculous 'love at first sight' took me completely out of the story but aside from that, I did enjoy the book. Rich, vivid world-building and ethereal magic combine in an epic tale thats perfect for fans of Snow Like Ashes, These Broken Stars, or Magonia. I would recommend to a friend, it was a refreshing change to most dystopian novels out now and reminded me a lot of A Handmaids Tale. From New York Times bestselling author Amy Ewing (The Jewel) comes the exciting first book in a new fantasy duology. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? Jolene kissed a boy on her high school graduation night. Shes lived in Anchorage, near the Alyeska ski resort, on a cabin on an island on a lake, and then in a boring old house. It became the impetus for Glaude to undertake an excavation of his own. Against the backdrop of bulldozers and the noise of sledgehammers, it “looked like the excavation of an ancient ruin”, and called to mind “what Baldwin saw in the latter part of his life in the United States … decay and wreckage alongside greed and selfishness”. Only the writing room remained, “exposed for the sun to beat down on its side”. Glaude, who has taught Baldwin for many years, had come in search of any surviving traces of the writer’s refuge, and found most of it crumbling to dust. I n 2018, two years after the “disastrous” 2016 US presidential election, Eddie Glaude Jr, professor of African American Studies at Princeton, made a pilgrimage to the house in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in the south of France, where James Baldwin had lived for almost two decades, and which was now being knocked down to make way for luxury flats. New or casual readers of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series will be lost in its eighth installment (after 2009's Lover Avenged), but Ward's fans love her soap opera storytelling and are happy to forgive unpronounceable names and occasionally overeager tough talk (at a solemn wedding, was smiling like a motherfucker). After all, it was not every evening that a baronet collapsed senseless in his own music room. There was a little thrill of excitement in the air. Behind me the guests were murmuring, buzzing, pushing closer to get a look of their own. He busied himself for a few brisk moments, palpating and pulse-taking, while I bobbed a bit, trying to see over his shoulder. He is convulsing."Īn impatient figure in black pushed past me to kneel at Edward's side. I leaned as close to him as my corset would permit. He lay, curled like a question mark, his evening suit ink-black against the white marble of the floor. I stared at him, not quite taking in the fact that he had just collapsed at my feet. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor. I'd say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accurate. Against a background of red and white Russians fighting each other, Japan propping up puppet generals and Chinese secret societies fighting themselves and the authorities, Corto and his old frenemie Rasputin are set on the trail of the gold by the Red Lanterns, an all-female Chinese gang led by the redoubtable Shanghai Lil. Set, as so many Corto Maltese tales are, at a time of conflict and in a place where cultures meet, a range of privateers, aristocrats and soldiers (some of them, including the ‘Mad Baron’, based on real-life characters) are all out to find the location of an armoured train filled with gold they believe is somewhere in Manchuria. Corto Maltese in Siberia is one of the richest, plot and character-packed stories Hugo Pratt ever produced, an exercise in restraint drawn entirely in four strip pages, with no big splash pages. |
